Hi, I’m Jacqui Jay, an indie, multi-genre author, writing as Jacqui Jay Grafton. I was born in Ulster and have now lived in my adopted city of Nottingham for over sixty years. I spent most of my working life in the print industry, returning to university after retirement to study photography. I spent many happy years as both a wildlife and creative photographer, with my work published worldwide. As a natural progression from this, I became a judge on the British Camera Club circuit. My photographic days came to an end with the double whammy of Covid and the onset of AMD (Age-related macular degeneration). By the time the epidemic had ended, I could no longer focus through the viewfinder of my camera. As the old saying goes however, when one door closes another one opens. I had dabbled with the idea of writing at odd moments in my life, so this seemed like a good time to take it seriously.
I self-published my first novel, Circles of Confusion, when I was 76 and, to date, I have published seven books, including the Ashes on the Tongue trilogy, set in the Ulster of my girlhood. Along the way, I have tried my hand at flash fiction and am currently writing short stories of approximately 5000 words. As AMD is progressive, I am not sure what the future holds but at the moment, with the aid of modern technology and help from Jan, my partner of nearly 50 years, I hope to continue with my passion for writing.
